How can one stay ahead?
This year in the United States, there was a big topic of building
a wall to prevent people who are not citizens coming into the country. Although
this is a very widely known topic however, how much do you know on the topic?
Many of these people come to this country in order to earn more money to
support their families back home. Often living in very poor conditions here to
ensure their family can get as much money as possible. This week in my Family
class we learned a bit more on this matter. Many people are just searching for
a better life for their children they seek the United States not to be rich but
to have a better living standard overall. A specific example of this we learned
in our class is with some Mexican families. Often these families need to contact
people referred to as “Coyotes”. These people charge undocumented people four
thousand dollars to help sneak them into the U.S border. I learned from my
teacher typically the father is the one to first go into the country.
Typically, the people are usually brought to Texas or California. Upon arriving
it is important that they find a job as soon as possible. I also learned
despite how qualified these individuals are with higher education they end
having to work manual labor jobs. These are jobs that do not require too much
knowledge or too much use of English. In several cases, the father does not know
a single bit of English. Sadly, because of the lack of money, the father
usually ends up living with people he met by sneaking into the border often, they
will rent a room. This is interesting to me because I had an uncle that decided
to do this journey several years ago, and he told us about his experience. He
said that at least 15 people lived in a tiny apartment, and it was the only way
they could afford to live so they could send money to their family. Meanwhile, his
wife was working up to 16 hours because she had no schooling experience, and
she needs to maintain the family and save as much as she can to cross the
border with her entire family, the father is still sending money. The children
hardly ever get to talk to their dad because he is busy working and same with
their mother. Therefore, the extended family helps in taking care of them. The
grandmother or even the uncle are taking care of the kids. This might be a good
thing because they are getting closer to the extended family. The cousins now
feel more like siblings instead of distant relatives. With time, usually 1- 4
years, the parents were able to save enough to cross the border and pay to a coyote
to help the family do the trip. This trip is extremely dangerous too many
people will die during the journey and often many women are raped. It is very
saddening to know how much they must risk in order to have a better life. There
are even more sacrifices as they must leave their families, their culture, and
your home and city that you grew up in. When they leave, they do not know if
they will ever be able to go home, since they have no documentation it would be
very expensive and dangerous for them to return home. When the family finally reunited
in the United States, the children will not have the same connection to their
father as they used to do because of how busy the Father is and the lack of
communication from being away. Now being in the U.S requires the whole family
to work hard in order to earn money to find a house to stay in. This is many of
the trial’s immigrants have to face trying to have a better status and quality
of life. Now I know this is a very controversial topic but I implore you to
think of the sacrifices these people are willing to make in order to have a
better life.
